How to Calculate Your GPA

This GPA calculator helps students determine their cumulative grade point average on the standard 4.0 scale used by most colleges and universities in the United States.

GPA Calculation Steps

  • Add all your courses with their credit hours and letter grades
  • The calculator converts letter grades to their numerical equivalents (A=4.0, B=3.0, etc.)
  • Quality points are calculated for each course (grade value × credit hours)
  • Total quality points are divided by total credit hours to determine GPA
  • Results are displayed with two decimal places (e.g., 3.45)

Understanding GPA Scales

Standard 4.0 Scale:

  • • A = 4.0 (90-100%)
  • • B = 3.0 (80-89%)
  • • C = 2.0 (70-79%)
  • • D = 1.0 (60-69%)
  • • F = 0.0 (Below 60%)

With +/- Variations:

  • • A- = 3.7
  • • B+ = 3.3
  • • B- = 2.7
  • • C+ = 2.3
  • • C- = 1.7
  • • D+ = 1.3

Why GPA Matters

  • Scholarships often have minimum GPA requirements
  • Some employers consider GPA for entry-level positions
  • Graduate programs typically require minimum GPAs
  • Academic honors are based on GPA thresholds

Tips for Improving Your GPA

  • Retake courses where you received low grades (if allowed)
  • Balance difficult courses with electives
  • Seek academic support before grades suffer
  • Monitor your GPA regularly to track progress
