Gear Ratio Calculation Formulas

  • Overall Ratio: Transmission Gear × Final Drive
  • Speed at RPM: (RPM × Tire Diameter) / (Overall Ratio × 336)
  • RPM at 60 mph: (Overall Ratio × 336 × 60) / Tire Diameter
  • Effective Ratio: Overall Ratio / (Tire Diameter / 26)

Common Gear Ratios for Different Vehicles

Transmission Gears:

  • • 1st gear: 2.66 - 4.00 (for maximum acceleration)
  • • 2nd gear: 1.78 - 2.50
  • • 3rd gear: 1.30 - 1.80
  • • 4th gear: 1.00 - 1.40 (direct drive)

Tire Size Impact on Gear Ratios

Larger tires effectively create a higher (taller) gear ratio, while smaller tires create a lower (shorter) ratio. The effective ratio helps compare setups with different tire sizes when tuning your vehicle's performance.

  • +1" tire diameter ≈ +0.10 final drive ratio change
  • -1" tire diameter ≈ -0.10 final drive ratio change
  • Changing from 26" to 28" tires ≈ similar effect as changing from 3.73 to 3.55 final drive
